Exploring the Koh Rong Archipelago from Song Saa | OffTheGrid Travel
A protected marine reserve, minutes from every villa deck
Song Saa Private Island’s two tiny islands sit inside a protected marine reserve in the Koh Rong Archipelago, and every guest’s stay carries a full calendar of ways into it — snorkelling the House Reef, kayaking through mangroves, coral restoration with the resort’s own marine biologists, and a night trip out to see the water turn bioluminescent blue. None of it requires leaving the resort’s own boundary, and most of it barely requires planning.
What adventures are included at Song Saa Private Island?
Song Saa’s House Reef sits a few steps from most villa decks, protected water the resort has spent close to two decades restoring, and every stay includes snorkelling kit to explore it independently. Guided experiences run from a mangrove kayak adventure through the channel separating Koh Ouen and Koh Bong, to coral restoration sessions with the resort’s resident marine biologists, planting new coral onto the reef itself. After dark, a bioluminescence trip takes guests out onto water that glows blue when disturbed, one of the archipelago’s least-known phenomena. Song Saa also runs a Khmer cooking class, and breakfast served quite literally with the birds, in the rainforest canopy.

What is dining like at Song Saa Private Island?
Food at Song Saa is built around place rather than menu. Vista Restaurant & Lounge, an overwater thatched pavilion, serves contemporary Cambodian cuisine built on Khmer flavours and sustainably sourced seafood. Driftwood Beach Bar keeps things simpler — thin-crust pizzas, Khmer-inspired salads, sushi and cocktails, served with sand between your toes. Beyond the two restaurants, Song Saa’s “destination-immersed dining” moves the table entirely: a hollow dug into the beach, beside the pool, or deep in the jungle, with fine wine and a set menu wherever a couple chooses to sit.

How does Song Saa Private Island support the Koh Rong Archipelago?
Song Saa was built the opposite way round to most resorts: the Song Saa Foundation has worked in the Koh Rong Archipelago since 2007, and the resort exists to fund it, not the other way around. It is a certified B Corporation and marine-positive by design, running its own coral restoration programme and supporting the wider archipelago’s communities and reef. For guests, that translates into a stay that is genuinely additive to the islands it sits on, something we look for in every property in our Roam collection.
How OffTheGrid Travel plans a Koh Rong discovery trip around Song Saa
For our Roam-collection itineraries, Song Saa gives guests a way to explore one of Southeast Asia’s least-developed archipelagos without sacrificing comfort. The resort’s own speedboat covers the crossing from Sihanoukville directly, so a stay here pairs easily with wider time in Cambodia, from Angkor to Phnom Penh. Tell us how much time you want on the water versus on land, and we’ll build the itinerary around it, in the same way we plan our Namia River Retreat cultural escapes.
