Limestone karst mountains rising over green rice paddies in Phang Nga, Thailand

When the UK turns grey, much of Southeast Asia is at its best. For winter sun in Asia, the question is rarely where the sunshine is. It is how to find it without the crowds. At OffTheGrid Travel, we plan tailor-made winter sun holidays around the way you like to travel, not around a brochure. Tell us what matters to you, and we build the trip from there. Below, we share a recent Thailand itinerary and a few of the Asian properties we know well.

Why Asia for winter sun

From roughly November to April, Thailand's Andaman coast enjoys its dry season, with calm seas, clear water and long, warm days. It is the reason Phuket is one of the most popular winter sun destinations for UK travellers. It is also the reason parts of it feel busy. The good news is that some of Thailand's quietest islands sit less than an hour from Phuket by boat, and that is where a tailor-made approach makes the difference.

Case study: from Phuket to Thailand's quieter side

The brief. Our guests were flying into Phuket for their winter escape, but they did not want the busy beaches and nightlife Phuket is known for. They asked for smaller islands, a slower pace and somewhere that felt less touristy, with some variety across the trip.

What we built. Rather than one hotel on Phuket, we used the airport as a gateway and built a three-part journey around Phang Nga Bay and the Andaman Sea.

Stop 1  ·  Koh Racha Yai

A small island south of Phuket, reached by speedboat from Chalong. Its bays are known for exceptionally clear water, good snorkelling and white sand. Day boats visit in the middle of the day, but staying overnight means quiet mornings and evenings when the island is largely yours.

Stop 2  ·  Koh Yao Noi

Set in the middle of Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and Krabi, Koh Yao Noi is a world away from the resorts across the water. Life here moves at the pace of fishing villages, rubber plantations and rice fields, with limestone karsts rising from the bay on the horizon. It suits travellers who want to cycle quiet roads, kayak and watch the sun set over the islands.

Stop 3  ·  Phang Nga jungle

To finish, we moved inland to the mainland of Phang Nga province, trading beach for rainforest. A jungle base adds a completely different side of Thailand to the trip: waterfalls, forest walks and the sounds of the jungle at night, all within easy reach of Phuket airport for the flight home.

The result. Three distinct settings, each chosen around the brief: sea, island village and jungle. The same arrival airport, a very different holiday.

Our Asian collection

Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia. Two private islands in the Koh Rong archipelago, reached by speedboat from Sihanoukville. Villas include overwater and beachfront options with private plunge pools, and the resort established Cambodia's first marine reserve. Cambodia's coast is in its dry season through the UK winter, making it a strong alternative to Thailand for island winter sun.

Namia River Retreat, Vietnam. A five-star, all-villa wellness resort on a quiet islet in the Thu Bon River, a short bicycle ride from Hoi An's old town. Wellness runs through the whole stay rather than being confined to the spa. For central Vietnam, we recommend travelling from late winter into spring, when the weather settles.

These properties are a starting point, not a limit. Many of our guests book one of our collection properties as the centrepiece of a longer tailor-made journey, and we plan everything around it.

Bespoke, from the first conversation

Every trip we plan starts with you. Tell us your dates, who is travelling, the pace you prefer and the kind of places you love, and we will build the itinerary around those preferences. Quieter islands, a jungle hideaway, a private island, a wellness retreat, or a combination of all four across two countries. We recommend where to stay, how to link each stop and how to make transfers fit your flights.

And it costs no more. You pay the same rate as booking direct, with no mark-ups and no hidden service fees. Where available, our guests also receive extras such as late check-outs and welcome amenities, with one dedicated contact before, during and after the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place for winter sun in Asia?

For UK travellers, Thailand's Andaman coast is one of the most reliable choices, with its dry season running roughly from November to April. Cambodia's islands are also in their dry season over the UK winter. Central Vietnam, including Hoi An, is better from late winter into spring.

What are the best quiet islands near Phuket?

Koh Racha Yai and Koh Yao Noi are two of our favourites. Both are reached by speedboat from Phuket, and both feel far calmer than Phuket itself, particularly if you stay overnight rather than visiting on a day trip.

Can OffTheGrid Travel build a trip entirely around my preferences?

Yes. Every itinerary is bespoke. You tell us what you want from the trip, and we plan the destinations, properties, transfers and timings around it, whether that is a single island escape or a multi-stop journey across Asia.

Does booking a tailor-made trip with OffTheGrid Travel cost more?

No. You pay the same rate as booking directly with each property, with no mark-ups or service fees added.
